When you think of the American new wave scene, the first band that tends to come to mind is The Cars. The Boston-based quintet came up during the 1970s and gave their British counterparts a run for their money by cranking out some of the most infectious synth/keyboard-heavy pop songs you’ve ever heard. Despite the absence of new music in over 23 years, Ric Ocasek and the boys have made the decision to reunite and give the fans what they want a new album. The news seems almost bittersweet as it marks The Cars’ first studio effort without lead singer/bass player Benjamin Orr, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2000.
Rumors had begun swirling over the summer about the alleged reunion when a photo surfaced on The Cars’ Facebook page of band members in the studio… together. Just one week ago, a new video titled “Blue Tip” was added, and it wasn’t just any old video. This was the first snippet of new music from The Cars since the Door to Door album was released in 1987. Needless to say, as a fan, I geeked out a little. Growing up with a mother who loved this band will do that to you.
Recent statements made to Billboard indicate that there may be a chance The Cars will head out on out on tour, but nothing has been set in stone. We’ll keep you posted with more news as it comes.
