She’d probably admit it herself, but we’re going to go ahead and say that Joan Wasser is definitely a little bit out there. (Just watch the interview below, and you’ll see what we mean.) And while she may have caught your ear when she opened for Metric at a Celebrate Brooklyn date, the 40-year-old singer/songwriter is ready to infiltrate your CD player when she drops her new album early next year.
The former Dambuilders violin player has been performing as Joan As Police Woman for over half a decade, and her latest full-length, The Deep Field, is set to officially hit the streets on January 25th. Wasser’s friend and collaborator Bryce Goggin produced the album at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, and Wasser apparently really likes his work. He’s the only producer Wassser has worked with, and she says that she “doesn’t know if there’s anyone else like him, he’s living in a world where anything is possible regarding sound.” She’s not alone in that sentiment.
Goggin has produced everyone from Sean Lennon to The Ramones, but he’s most famous for mixing Pavement’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. From the look and sound of this EPK (via Direct Current Music), The Deep Field is going to be pretty damn funky. Wasser has given her session players a lot of freedom, and the songs seem to find the singer pounding out some grooves on the keys.
