While most of us in the States are eagerly planning out our best of 2010 lists, those tastemakers in the UK have already moved forward to 2011 (maybe their years really are shorter?) So, if you’re not too busy being a fat, lazy American, take some time out and enjoy the BBC’s Sound of 2011 list of artists they think will be on the rise in the big 2-0-1-1.
The list of 15 artists was compiled by various UK producers, DJs, members of the press, and critics and requires that each act selected simply not have a UK top 20 single or album on the charts by November 14th and “most not already be famous.” Like, just musically? Can they already be world-renowned neurosurgeons? Either way, the list of artists includes relative unknowns Anna Calvi, Daley, Clare Maguire, Wretch 32, Jessie J, James Blake, Nero, Jai Paul, Jamie Woon, Mona, The Vaccines, Esben and the Witch, Warpaint, Yuck, and The Naked & Famous. Now, bust out that Google tab and get searching.
The top five up and comers will be revealed the week of January 3rd. Last year’s top five were comprised of Ellie Goulding, the winner, followed by Marina and the Diamonds, Delphic, Hurts, and The Drums. Other winners in the nine-year history of the list include Bloc Party (Sound of 2005), The Ting Tings (Sound of 2008), and Franz Ferdinand (Sound of 2004). As always, stay tuned for the lucky winner and other info as it’s announced.
