Don’t Watch: Kings of Leon’s “Pyro”

When the word “pyro” comes to mind, usually you think of something explosive, thrilling, or maybe even remotely interesting. Apparently Kings of Leon decided to throw in a new perspective to the mix: boring. As “Radioactive” fades out on the radio, the Tennessee rockers have issued “Pyro” as their next single. It’s melodic, sure, but it’s also repetitive and rather vapid. Then again, that could describe nearly half of their latest record, Come Around Sundown. Seriously, it’s hard to believe these are the same guys who penned summertime favorites like “The Bucket” or “Taper Jean Girl”.

Not surprisingly, the video is equally dull. Despite the controversy surrounding it — apparently the casting company sent out a Craiglist ad searching for “characters with scars, pockmarked skin, physical abnormalities or deformities” — the dreary and incredibly slow moving clip feels inordinately taxing to watch. It even becomes a tad sanctimonious towards the end, especially when the band members bar flies start floating in a halo of light. Gimme a break.

But, to each is own…
