Let’s be honest. I’m not the only one who has trouble turning off 8 Mile anytime TBS decides to air it. In fact, Eminem‘s theatrical debut is anything but a guilty pleasure. I would even go as far to say it was one of my favorite movies of the last decade. So, good news: Eminem is once again teaming up with Stacey Snider — the current head of DreamWorks, who was in charge of Universal when it released 8 Mile in 2002 — for a reprisal of his 8 Mile role. Well, sort of.
Eminem has signed on to star in Southpaw, a film about “a welterweight boxer who tries to pull his career out of a tailspin after early successes lead to personal tragedy,” reports The Playlist. According to Snider, “In a way, this is a continuation of the ‘8 Mile’ story, but rather than a literal biography, we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life… At its core, this is a retelling of his struggles over the last five years of his life, using the boxing analogy.”
Despite its obvious similarities to that other must-see boxing film, Southpaw does have one thing in its favor: Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter will pen the script. Sutter will begin writing immediately, and he hopes complete a draft by February.
