Before this year, if you were a Soundgarden fan, you pretty much had to content yourself with listening to their old albums or playing “Black Hole Sun” on Rock Band. Granted, the latter wasn’t the problem considering how absolutely ridiculously often that song came up on random lists. But I’ll stop my hatred of the early random lists of that game before I start screaming about how much I hate Bon Jovi‘s “Wanted Dead or Alive”.
Right. Soundgarden. If you’ve hung on all this time, you’ve likely spent this year in bliss. Their first performance in 13 years, their headlining performance at Lollapalooza, an unreleased track and the video to it, and, most recently, the a ferocious performance on Conan. Talk about a comeback.
You may be wondering, then, what their next plans are. Well, in an interview with a Canadian radio station (via Blabbermouth), Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil revealed that a new studio album may actually be in the works.
“It’s very likely in the future, perhaps sooner than later, we’ll get together and de-emphasize the rehearsing part and emphasize the jamming part,” he said.
As for when that’ll actually happen, you’ll likely have to be patient. Thayil pointed out that the members of the band still have their side projects to take care of, but as soon as those are done, they’ll be focusing all of their energy on Soundgarden.
To further whet appetites, Soundgarden is also planning to release live records and B-side collection, plus Thayil promises more live performances are coming. “We had a live album in the can just waiting for someone to mix it,” he said. “We wanted to do a B-side album and that might be two or three albums. We’ll be doing other shows and working on releasing some albums from deeper in our catalog.” So if you’ve hung on this long previous to this year, you’ll have a little bit more to tide you over, but you ought to be patient enough to hang on a little more.
