While our coverage of Cornershop only goes back to April 2010, there’s something special about this British indie rock band with an Indian music tinge. In fact, we think their upcoming album Cornershop & The Double ‘O’ Groove Of might be their ticket into another level of notoriety. How, you ask, did we come to this assumption? Well, you don’t cancel a U.S. tour and seek funding from the fans for nothing. Otherwise, they’d just be fools. Right?
The album, the follow-up to 2009’s Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast, will feature vocalist Bubbley Kaur, who singer Tjinder Singh met years ago at Preston Lancashire (UK) as students. In a press release, the band describe the 10-track effort as the “Asian version of The Kids From Fame – totally upbeat, giving rise to new ways of expressing yourself.” Tracks include “Topknot”, the previously released M.I.A.-featuring single, and another song called “911 Curry”, which the band says is the story of when the “A-team meet up for an afternoon meal – a plan comes together, until Murdock has to flirt with the waitress.” A potential winner in our book if there ever was one.
