Grateful Dead to release 1972 European tour box set

What an amazing week for Deadheads and jam fans everywhere. First, we learn the Grateful Dead are getting their own video game. Then, the guys from Rothbury announced negotiations for a 2011 edition are underway. And now, details have surfaced about a 60-disc-plus box set for the Dead’s 1972 European Tour.

According to Spinner, the still-untitled collection chronicles the band’s first overseas tour. With 22 dates across England, Germany, France, Denmark, and Holland to sort through, producer David Lemieux is still busy mixing and mastering this comprehensive project. The aim of this exhaustive collection is not only to document the tour, but to capture the essence of the jam band pioneers.

The collection isn’t expected to drop until September, but you can reserve a copy of the first 3,000 personalized editions here. But it’s not going to come cheap; the price tag is $450. Don’t have the cash? You can check the video of “Ramble on Rose” down below.

Expect more massive box sets in the future. The Grateful Dead are currently considering compiling their fall 1973 and spring 1990 treks.
