Ariel Pink is nothing if not a performer. His storied live shows range anywhere from sexually confrontational to Andy Kaufmanesque. I was worried that Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti would go all mainstream for their television debut on Fallon last night, but turns out they stayed pretty avant-garde, and turned in a decent performance.
Ariel Pink, bedecked in gender-confusing garb, brought out “Round and Round”, which really is a song deserving of its various accolades. I’ve had that song stuck in my head for weeks at a time. But in this live-to-tape recording setting, Ariel Pink didn’t really put the effort into making those rich harmonies stay tune — which is fine if you’re not trying to sing dense, jazzy chords. Because of this, the song’s groovy chorus kind of lost its magic. Enjoy the carefree performance above.
