While you still have some time until The Flaming Lips drop their box set Heady Nuggs on Record Store Day, Wayne Coyne and friends are giving their fans an early present in the form of a new “single”. But rather than being coated in chocolate, “Two Blobs Fucking” will be one rich, delicious bit-sized morsel of standard Lips eccentricity and technological innovation.
Touted as a “revolutionary digital-only symphonic composition” and “the first-ever musical experience of its kind”, the track is made up of 12 separate parts that come together to create one song. Fans of the Lips may be familiar with the concept, as the band’s 1997 record, Zaireeka was meant to be played on four separate devices simultaneously. The band also experimented with the concept with “Parking Lot Experiments”, which made use of 40 car cassette players strategically placed and assigned a number to begin playing at. That later gave way to “The Boombox Experiments”, a similar occurrence that instead utilized 101 boomboxes the band toured with.
Since cassettes are clearly outdated, Wayne Coyne and co. are doing their latest sonic experiment with iPhone-related devices. The 12 parts are broken into 12 YouTube videos, which which you can find here. As an issued press release notes, “the more devices, the more harmonic possibilities can be constructed. You and your device, at one with the music, become the orchestra, just as the Gods of Technology naturally intended it to be.”
