Last year’s Black City, the standout, texture-laden, experimental disco redux album from DJ/producer/bandleader/art-pop enthusiast Matthew Dear is a multifaceted album, naturally. Dear’s macabre and surreal electronic textures are readily absorbed at first blush, and deepen and expand over time. Basically, it’d sound good for the first part of your ritzy cocktail party, but sound oh so wrong if your guests started really listening.
Dear is ready to follow up Black City with the relatively lengthy 9-song Shortwave EP, a compilation of remixes, both heard and unheard, B-sides, and one “Seance”. Lo-fi peak-freaks How To Dress Well teamed up with Dear for the seance (an apt wordplay on ‘remix’) of the beautiful “Slowdance”, which you can check out below.
Shortwave EP is out physically and digitally April 5th in the US, April 4th in the UK via Ghostly International. Currently, Dear is out on the road supporting Interpol, so be sure to check out his avant show before blasted with more dour from the currently bass-less Interpol.
