The 2011 edition of Record Store Day is looming on the horizon, but vinyl-heads might want to save a few bucks for a certain tribute disc that drops just a few days after the annual celebration of local music shops. As previously reported, April 19th will see the release of a Boogie 4 Stu, a Ben Waters-curated tribute album to Ian Stewart — aka “The Sixth Stone” — featuring contributions from current and former members of The Rolling Stones and PJ Harvey.
Streaming below is a cover Amos Wilburn’s “Rooming House Boogie”, which would surely make the late Houston, Tex. blues and boogie woogie icon proud. The four-and-a-half minute cut finds Waters on keys and vocals, with none other than the Stones’ legendary guitarist, Keith Richards, using his six-string sorcery to lay a few hot licks to tape. The track also features a reunion between Richards and the band’s former bassist, Bill Wyman, who departed in 1992.
The updated version stays true to the original, but benefits from the wonders of modern technology; Richards’ tremolo is crystal clear, every tone of Waters’ piano can be heard, and saxophone blasts from Derek Nash and Clive Ashley feel like they’re happening in your brain.
Boogie 4 Stu drops on April 19th via Eagle Rock, and a preview of the entire album is featured the video posted below “Rooming House Boogie”. Pre-orders for the album are going on at Amazon.com, and sales from the album benefit the British Heart Foundation, which aims to end premature death as a result of heart disease through research while providing quality care for those living with it.
