Check Out: Modest Mouse covers Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be The Day”

A couple of weeks back, we reported on the star-studded tribute to rock ‘n’ roll’s true king, Buddy Holly. With names like Paul McCartney, Lou Reed, Fionna Apple, and Patti Smith attached, suffice it to say, Rave On Buddy Holly will be a strong addition to the shelf. So far, it’s off to a great start. A few days ago, we were thrilled with The Black Keys’ take on Holly’s “Dearest”, and now, here we are on the worst day of the week — aka, Monday — with one of Holly’s most catchy hits to date: “That’ll Be The Day” via Modest Mouse.

Now, maybe it’s a joke, but since “That’ll Be The Day” is arguably one of the most poppy tunes in rock ‘n’ roll history, it’s sort of ironic that Modest Mouse is at the helm. Everyone who’s ever listened to or seen Isaac Brock knows how self-deprecating and offbeat he can be. The sugarcoated cadence of Holly’s classic doesn’t necessarily scream “Modest Mouse”, which is why the new cover sounds nothing like it. It’s morose, it’s slow, and it takes out all of the fun of the original – well, with the exception of the Brockian-styled verses. But, hey, that’s what a cover is for, right? Kudos to them for swinging to left field. Still, some Holly enthusiasts will probably skip this one. Oh well, can’t win ’em all. That’d be the day, huh?

You can hear “That’ll Be The Day” on the May 7th episode of Liza Richardson’s program on KCRW (scroll to 6:00 mark) (via Some Kind of Awesome).
