As part of AV Undercover‘s 25 Cover Songs, where today’s hottest indie acts are invited into the The Onion’s offices to choose a cover of their liking off a list, Florida’s Surfer Blood stopped by the Chicago location (you know, on their last visit), and went for the Pixies’ “Gigantic”. But, what’s that you say? Who in the all-male quartet would dare take on Kim Deal’s vocals? Well, according to vocalist John Paul Pitts, “[Drummer] T.J. does a really nice Kim Deal impersonation,” but, no, they opted for The Girls At Dawn’s Sarah Baldwin, instead. Not surprisingly, the punky fuzz outfit does a great job, nailing the song with ease and precision. Baldwin doesn’t stray too far and Pitts’ does his best to conjure up the grit and grime of one Frank Black. Given the small room, though, they deserve some applause. Now, will they play it ever on-stage? We’ll have to see.
