Watch the Throne debuts at #1

As expected, Jay-Z and Kanye West’s collaborative LP, Watch the Throne, topped the Billboard 200 Album Charts in its debut week after moving nearly 436,000 copies. It’s the second-largest sales week of the year for an album, behind only the 1.1 million start of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, reports Billboard.

Almost 75% (or 321,000 copies) of the album’s sales were digitial, with nearly 290,000 downloads coming from iTunes alone. According to Apple, that number was good enough to break the U.S. iTune Store’s one-week sales record, previously held by Coldplay’s 2008 album Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends, which sold 282,000 copies through the digital retail giant.

Watch the Throne also gives Jay-Z’s 12th number one album; only The Beatles have more (19). As for West, this marks his fifth number one.
