The Beach Boys’ SMiLE is something of a lost relic in pop music history. Recorded in 1966/1967 as a follow up to Pet Sounds, the album was put on the backburner after Brian Wilson began to suffer from depression. Although Wilson released his own version of the LP in 2004 alongside Van Dyke Parks, the original Beach Boys recording sessions were left to toil in creative purgatory - that is, until now with Capitol Records’ latest collection, The Smile Sessions.
As previously reported, the 40-track set comprises the finalized album, along with bonus tracks and studio demos. The set will be available as a standard two-disc CD and as part of a deluxe box set that features five CDs, two LPs, two 7″ singles, a 60 page book, and one “three-dimensional shadowbox lid.”
Capitol Records will release both packages tomorrow, November 1st. Right now, though, all 40 tracks from the standard release are streaming over at Spinner.com through next Monday. And here’s where we’d insert a pun about how this will make Beach Boys fans grin ear-to-ear.
