Whether in music videos, press photos, or live shows, there’s no hard and fast rule on music fashion, and it’s wonderful. No one’s going to stop you before you get on stage and say, “Hey, you can’t do that,” and if they do, you can just hire a new manager. Looking at the modern indie-sphere, we’ve gone everywhere from ripped jeans, retro resurgence, leather overdose, Aztec patterns, and a myriad collection of hats! Couple these music fashion “innovations” with asymmetrical hair and the occasional face-paint, and you’ve got a heap of bands trying to stick out in the fashion world.
Now, whether their image helps to sell albums, or scare people away from their live show, that’s for us to decide. (Well, okay, it’s not for us to decide really, but we’re going to have some fun with it anyhow.) Think about it: There are hundreds of groups that wear the perfect fitted jeans with the best fitting tanktop ever, and hundreds that don’t quite “get it” yet. As Fashion Week comes to a close, decided to list some of our favorites on both sides of the coin. After all, fashion tends to spark opinion.
