Unknown Mortal Orchestra covers Dirty Projectors’ “Swing Lo Magellan”

umopromo2013 Unknown Mortal Orchestra covers Dirty Projectors Swing Lo Magellan

In recent months, Unknown Mortal Orchestra have been on something of a covers kick, delivering spot-on renditions of both Lindstrøm’s 2012 single “Rà-àkõ-st” and Otis Redding’s classic “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay”. Now, the psych-rock trio are trying their hand at Dirty Projectors’ excellent single “Swing Lo Magellan”, off last year’s titular LP. As opposed to their other reworkings, UMO take a few more liberties here, transforming the emotional output of this earnest folk ballad from slightly romantic to deep-seeded heartache with little more than a stripped-down guitar and Ruban Nielson’s extra-hoarse vocals. Listen in below.

“Swing Lo Magellan” will be featured on UMO’s new EP, Blue Record, due out October 29th via Jagajaguwar. It also features acoustic takes of the II tracks “Swim and Sleep (Like A Shark)”, “Faded in the Morning”, and “So Good at Being in Trouble”, plus a song entitled “Puttin’ It Down”.
