Kill the Trumpet Player, the long-in-the-works Miles Davis biopic, is moving forward with actor Don Cheadle cast to play the legendary musician. Cheadle will also make his directorial debut with the project, working off a script he wrote alongside Steven Baigelman. The plot will focus on Davis’ temporary retirement and subsequent return to music in 1979.

Along with Cheadle, the cast includes Ewan McGregor as a Rolling Stone reporter and Zoe Saldana as Davis’ former wife Frances. Davis’ longtime collaborator Herbie Hancock will also be involved in the production, which is set to begin in June.
