Despite their recent run of inter-band turmoil, Guided by Voices are maintaining their prolific release schedule. On February 8th, the band will release Motivational Jumpsuit via Fire Records and their own GBV Inc. imprint. The followup to April’s English Little League (in additional to a number of solo records from frontman Robert Pollard) is the classic lineup’s fifth LP since reuniting in 2010.
Our first listen of the album comes with lead single “Littlest League Possible”. Clocking in at under 90 seconds, it’s a breezy and vigorous shot of bare-bones garage rock that sees Pollard disregard any emotional weight to croon a new life mantra: “Gonna have a lot of fun/ Gonna hit a home run/ In the littlest league possible.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Pollard said the song is a metaphor about his “lack of desire to compete with other bands,” adding there’s “No competition, no pressure, no rules. The way I do things now is an absolute blast. I think one earns it when entering one’s golden years. It also means that you don’t necessarily have to act your age.”
