Angel Haze’s most recent entry in her “30 Gold” series went the spoken word route with the highly revelatory and deeply personal “You Broke My Heart”. Now, she shifts to the other side of the emotional spectrum with a cover of British soul singer John Newman’s “Love Me Again”. There’s not much to change in a number one single, so Haze remains faithful to the track’s rambunctious take on funked-up, bass-heavy soul. Her rendition, however, has a little more punch than Newman’s original, with the Miike Snow-esque piano line and romping horn section sitting higher in the mix. Haze’s vocals, meanwhile, vibrate with some slight Auto-tuning, but it all fits nicely within the louder context. Dance along to the energetic number below.
Haze’s “30 Gold” series, the lead up to her Dirty Gold debut, has featured takes on tracks from Jay Z, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Gil Scott-Heron, Drake, Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Dirty Gold is due out later this year via Republic Records.
