To the dismay of Donald Glover, “Sweatpants”, a track off his forthcoming album as Childish Gambino, Because the Internet, leaked onto the Internet early Monday morning.
“fuck this, Glover tweeted. “im trying to create one of the more imaginative rollouts, and other people’s lust for money and impatience is ruining it. to be clear, im not talking about my fans, or blogs, or anyone who post my music after leaks. i want my music out. but it could’ve been better.”
However, as one fan astutely noted to Glover, “but that’s a perfect example of how your album title is so relevant to how shit happen.” You can’t build a hip-hop career through the internet, title your new album Because the Internet, and then be caught off guard when the Internet does the Internet. Then again, what if this leak was the ‘imaginative rollout,’ and the subsequent rant is part of a bit. Gambino will soon grow increasingly depressed and disappear into the depths of the Internet, posting really ambiguous letters on message boards, leading to an elaborate Internet-driven death hoax, and thus becoming some awesome commentary on consumption and communication circa Web 3.0. Or maybe, I’m just too riled up from JFK documentaries and last night’s episode of Homeland and want to write my own conspiracy theory.
As for the track itself, “Sweatpants” is a surprisingly braggadocios collaboration with Problem, which finds Gambino seemingly going line by line through his OkCupid profile. Lyrics include “I got more tail than that PetCo, you faker than some Sweet’N Low,” and “Furniture custom, you shop at IKEA / So Maserati, you whipping a Kia.”
