While gearing up to play their coldest show ever when they head to Antarctica next month, Metallica is already looking ahead to warmer days. Next summer, the band will embark on their Metallica by Request tour, in which ticket purchasers will get to vote on the set list. Fans will get to choose 17 of the nearly 140 songs from the band’s 30-plus-year existence, but the metal legends will pick one of their own: a brand, spanking new one. The band is indeed working on a new album and will use this tour to test its legs.
The tour currently includes only three shows in Germany, including Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park, with more dates forthcoming. “We are once again psyched to break free of the four walls in the studio to get energized by our devoted European friends for a couple of weeks next May and June,” Lars Ulrich said in a press statement. “On top of that, the fact that all our nutty fans will pick the songs we play should be some next level fun and take a big load off my shoulders as the guy who usually writes the set list!”
Tickets for all shows (festivals included) can be purchased here, and you can watch the results of the voting process unfold at Metallica’s website. To see which tracks our own Jon Hadusek would indubitably vote for, check out his recent list of Metallica’s top 10 songs. See his number “One” choice beneath the tour dates.
