For the first in nearly a decade, the three members of pioneering riot grrrl band Sleater-Kinney appeared on stage together. The reunion took place during Pearl Jam’s concert in Portland last night, as Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein, and Janet Weiss were welcomed as special guests for the band’s big finale, a cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World”.
Above, check out a photo of the band alongside members of Pearl Jam and R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey, who also sat in for the performance (via Instagram user eli_w_n). Update: Watch video of the performance below.
Tucker, Brownstein, and Weist last performed together in 2006. Since then, all three members have launched successful solo careers: Tucker’s released two albums with the Corin Tucker Band, Brownstein stars in the IFC comedy Portlandia, and Weiss has worked alongside Stephen Malkmus and Quasi. In 2011, Brownstein and Weiss reunited to form the super group Wild Flag alongside Mary Timony and Rebecca Cole.
Back in 2010, Brownstein claimed Sleater-Kinney would reunite within the next five years, and 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the band’s formation. Might Sleater-Kinney follow Outkast’s lead and prove to be 2014’s second big reunion? Stay tuned.
