Last night on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart dedicated a full segment to the controversy surrounding luxury department store Barneys, and hit particularly hard at Jay Z for his continued relationship with the store despite allegations of racial profiling. Jay Z being caught in the middle of the controversy is “not as awkward a position as sitting handcuffed in the back of a police car wearing the $300 belt you just bought,” scoffed Stewart.
Stewart then turned it over to Daily Show correspondent Larry Wilmore, who began by spoofing Kanye West’s infamous comments about George W. Bush by saying, “Jay Z doesn’t care about black people.”
“He doesn’t care about black people who want him to boycott Barneys, and I don’t blame him, Jon…” Wilmore explained. “He’s got a multi-million dollar brand to protect… These days, he’s too big of a commercial force to rail against the danger of the man. He is the danger. He is the one who frisks. He’s not Jay Z, he’s Jay Z Penny!”
After showing a photo of Jay Z and Mayor Michael Bloomberg breaking ground at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Wilmore told Stewart, “I know Jay Z used to be a groundbreaking rapper, now he’s a rapper who shows up at groundbreaking,” adding, “He’s burying the remains of his street cred.”
