The nostalgia of Eminem’s latest album, The Marshall Mathers 2 LP, extends beyond the songs themselves. The video for “Berzerk” saw Em pay homage to early Beastie Boys and old VHS recordings. Now, with the video for “Rap God”, he channels another ’80s mainstay: Max Headroom, the fictional face of Artificial Intelligence.
There’s also a few references to George Orwell’s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, specifically involving surveillance and mind control. At the very least, director Rich Lee and Eminem will leave you looking over your shoulder for the next few days.
