Listen: Against Me! go grunge with “Black Me Out”

Over the years, Against Me! have assumed a number of musical aesthetics. From the anarchist cow-punk of 2003′s Against Me! as the Eternal Cowboy to the more mainline, anthemic rock of 2010’s White Crosses, the Floridian outfit’s one true allegiance has always been to sounds both angsty and visceral. With “Black Me Out”, the latest single off their forthcoming sixth studio album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, they’re exploring a genre wrought with both sentiments by diving headfirst into ’90s grunge.

While not exactly the second coming of Pearl Jam or Mudhoney, the album closer instead infuses some of their recent work with a little bit of studio grim and fuzz, helping shift their tendency of going big and boisterous toward a direction of more outright fury and intensity. But whereas grunge has a pronounced vein of metal, “Black Me Out” readily emphasizes the group’s punk roots, keeping their display to a tight and focused three-minutes as to make the barrage of emotional blows all that more devastating. Listen in below.

Transgender Dysphoria Blues is due out January 21st, 2014 via the band’s own record label, Total Treble. For more sounds, be sure to check out lead single “FUCKMYLIFE666”.
