Everything Is New, an arts project collaboration between Scotland-based collective Transgressive North and children’s charity Love in Action, will release a pair of albums on January 20th to benefit India’s Dalit (“untouchable”) youth. We’ve already heard Rustie and Four Tet’s contributions to the project; now, check out what Los Angeles electro-pop outfit YACHT is offering up.
Featuring a jittering dance beat alongside sampled voices of kids from Love in Action’s Light of Love Children’s Home in southeast India, “Icarus Complex” is exactly what Transgressive North directors Jamie Chambers and Mike Brogan wanted for BOATS. The pair told CoS that they asked contributors “to make whatever music they wanted, but to think about what the kids might like to hear themselves singing. And we added as a wee hint that the kids like to dance.”
“So on that front, [YACHT figurehead] Jona [Bechtolt] did us, and the children of the Light of Love Children’s Home proud. The kids went crazy for ‘Icarus Complex’ when they heard it at our dance party on December 31st, 2012, and danced so hard that the staff at the home started to worry they had a riot on their hands!”

YACHT, Rustie, and Four Tet are just a few of the artists appearing on BOATS. The tracklist also includes Deerhoof, No Age, Bear in Heaven, Gang Gang Dance, Dan Deacon, Califone, Julian Lynch, and many others. Meanwhile, the second record from Everything Is New, Sun Choir, is the latest from Scottish indie rockers Marram and features contributions from Jarvis Cocker, doseone, author Irvine Welsh, and more. From that album, we’ve heard the Owen Pallet-featuring “With Us Instead”.
Proceeds from Everything Is New will help provide food, clothing, education, and medical care to children throughout southeast India. Each album includes the 70-minute Everything Is New film, an “inspiring movie about the turning of the earth and the play of children. It tells a mythic story of togetherness, peril and hope.” Below, watch a short documentary about the project.
