Metallica’s Orion Music + More won’t return in 2014

Despite a successful showing in 2013, Metallica’s Orion Music + More festival will not return to Detroit in 2014. A spokesperson for festival’s promoter C3 told The Detroit News that Metallica’s upcoming “By Request” European tour would prevent the band from holding the festival for a third year. (The first year was held in Atlantic City.)

The spokesperson also stated that Orion would return in 2015, though whether it would come back to Detroit or not is unknown. Before this year’s event, Lars Ulrich told The Detroit News that they hoped to find their festival a permanent home. “The goal is to find a spot and park ourselves there and see if it’s possible to become part of the A-list group of festivals,” Ulrich said, adding, “If Chicago is Lollapalooza and San Francisco is Outside Lands, maybe there was a shot of doing the same thing with Orion in Detroit.” C3 had a deal in place to keep Orion at Detroit’s Belle Isle through 2015, though an escape clause allowed them to pull out this year.

Held June 8th-9th, this year’s festival was headlined by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica and also featured performances by Deftones, Dropkick Murphys, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Gogol Bordello, Death Grips, and FIDLAR. Metallica also appeared under the name Dehaan and performed Kill ‘Em All in full. Watch our video recap of the fest below.
