Pharrell Williams has finally found space amidst his busy production schedule to work on a new solo album. In a massively in-depth interview with Complex, the super-producer reveals that a follow-up to his 2006 release, In My Mind, is in the pipeline.
Details are slim, but we do know one thing: the record will be rap-free. “I love rapping,” Williams says. “But—something’s coming, and I’m not rapping on it.” He points to being older, married, and a father as why he feels the urge to move away from verse-spitting. “No rapping. It’s focused. Like I told you, that’s the difference between 30 and 40. ’Cause I was 30, now I’m 40—and I’m not rapping.”
As for the rest of the interview, Williams discusses the arc of his career, growing up on Diddy and Nirvana, his opinions on collaborator Miley Cyrus, and how working on two of the year’s biggest hits (Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”) was liking turning a sock inside out.
