As Managing Editor Adam Kivel noted, Oneohtrix Point Never’s R Plus Seven made our Top 50 albums of 2013 for its ability to “produce dizzying thrills, intense paranoia, and everything in between.” Emojis, on the other hand, are not so complex, often times silly little graphics meant as simple and fleeting placeholders for happiness, hunger, and even hair cuts.
One would think that the gulf between OPN’s intricate sound and the simplicity of Emojis would make them incompatible, but in John Michael Boling’s newly created video for album opener “Boring Angel”, an ever-changing series of Emojis set in time with the song’s kaleidoscopic electronics brings about a genuine emotional ride.
