Bruno Mars is set to headline this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, but he won’t be going at it alone. According to the Los Angeles Times, Red Hot Chili Peppers will join Mars on stage. It’s unclear in what capacity the Chili Peppers will serve (e.g., will they be Mars’ backing band? Or, will they come out for just one song?), however, an official announcement is expected to be made on Saturday.
As the Times explains, the addition of the Chili Peppers “will likely broaden the appeal of the halftime show beyond Mars’ fan base and appeal to older viewers.”
Chili Peppers are also set to perform a Super Bowl-related event at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Saturday, February 1st. (The big game takes place the following night).
A number of other big-name acts are playing concerts in and around New York City during Super Bowl week, including Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Drake, and The Roots. Plus, Kendrick Lamar will headline ESPN’s Super Bowl Party on Pier 36, and Janelle Monáe will play at Lehman College on January 28 for VH1’s Super Bowl Blitz, according to Billboard.
