Listen: Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne goes acoustic with “Dark Brown Teeth”

Ever the paragons of grime and dissonance, the Melvins have spent the last few years exploring their softer side. In 2012, frontman Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover performed and recorded as part of the Avant jazz trio Melvins Lite. This past May saw the release of Everybody Loves Sausages, which demonstrated the band’s affinity for mainstream pop and rock with covers of The Kinks, Queen, and Roxy Music, among others.

Today, Osborne abandons his beloved noise-rock entirely for his first-ever solo acoustic track, “Dark Brown Teeth”. Don’t let the lonesome guitar fool you; this is hardly your typical coffee house fare. In a startling move, Osborne sounds more dark and menacing sans the layers of discord, though don’t call him an American folk hero.

“What I’m doing, it’s not folk music, it’s not heavy metal,” Osborne told Rolling Stone. “It’s ‘molk,’ how ’bout that? What usually happens with people, when they do something of this nature, especially rock & rollers, they either sound like a shitty version of Woody Guthrie or a half-assed version of something horrible like James Taylor. We don’t need another Woody. Even Bob Dylan knew he couldn’t be Woody Guthrie… I like Woody Guthrie fine, but I don’t need the 50th generation version of it. Do you?”

“Dark Brown Teeth” is set to appear on This Machine Kills Artists, a limited-edition 10-inch Osborne will be schlepping during a 15-date solo tour next month (itinerary below). As Rolling Stone points out, the single features four new songs alongside acoustic versions of Melvins’ “Let God Be Your Gardener” and “Revolve”. Those originals, plus another dozen or so more, will then appear on an as-of-yet untitled acoustic solo LP due out in June.
