Twin Sister change name to Mr. Twin Sister, stream “Out of the Dark”

Perhaps even more playful than their New Wave sound, New York’s Twin Sister chose a band name that succinctly encapsulates a certain childlike sense of romanticism. Now, though, the five-piece has decided to repackage themselves as the ’80s-sounding Mr. Twin Sister. While the moniker seems doubly fluffy, the band has seemingly made an exodus into somewhat headier lyrical concepts.

Case in point, their first new song as Mr. Twin Sister, “Out of the Dark”. Sonically, it’s in the same vein as 2011’s In Heaven, as the band pieces together bits of Portishead and Cocteau Twins to forge a mysterious-but-uber-danceable synth-pop ballad. It’s the subject matter, though, where their playfulness ends, as singer Andrea Estella explores issues of transgenderism with direct but celebratory lines like “I am a woman, but inside I’m a man, and I want to be as gay as I can”. If nothing else, it certainly helps to inform the band’s choice of their gender-bending new moniker.
