When Snoop Dogg
covered ruined Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend” in the name of Hot Pockets, I thought to myself, “OK, that has got to be the height of his cultural shark-jumping.” Turns out, I was more wrong than beef taco Hot Pockets. No, that moment instead comes as the Doggfather of gangsta rap teams with the one-hit wonder that just won’t quit, Korea’s PSY, for a new track entitled “Hangover”.
As someone who loved “Gentleman” (that’d be PSY’s song after “Gangnam Style”), even I can’t keep track of the litany of musical crimes. There’s the bastardization of trap music; Snoop’s use of Auto-Tune; what may or may not be Snoop rapping in Korean; and the worst line in all of modern rap-dom, “Smoke like a broke stove”. Remember, kids, he still gave us “Gin & Juice” and we have to always be appreciative.
Not that the accompanying music video is much better. If you can picture Snoop being dropped into the video for “Gangnam Style”, then you’re not trying hard enough. Here, the two wander around getting smashed, leading to a night of SOJU bombs, bad karaoke, wandering around a carnival, and, um, Snoop watching PSY bathe. It just makes this writer feel 24 kinds of awkward, and I once called a college professor “baby boo” on accident.
Watch it below. Then, join me in erasing this specific memory by getting black-out drunk.
