Listen: Austra covers Duran Duran’s “American Science”

As previously reported, Los Angeles record label Manimal Vinyl is celebrating Duran Duran with a star-studded tribute album, entitled Making Patterns Rhyme. Already we’ve heard Moby’s House-inspired take on “Rio” and Warpaint’s post-rock version of “The Chauffeur”. Today, Toronto synth-pop outfit Austra tackle 1986’s “American Science”.

Similar to Warpaint’s efforts, Austra have all but completely overhauled the track. What was formerly a slow-churning blues-funk ballad has been reborn as dense, Avant-leaning synth ballad heavy on jarring bass and lush atmospherics. But peaking out from under all that random clamor is the voice of Katie Stelmanis, whose larger-than-life wailing is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking.

Making Patterns Rhyme is due out July 15th, and all sales will benefit Amnesty International. In addition to Moby, Warpaint, and Austra, the album features contributions from Little Dragon, Crocodiles, Barbarian, Luxxury, and Soko, among others. Check out the full tracklist below.
