Cold Specks shares new song “A Formal Invitation”, announces tour dates

Canadian “doom soul” musician Al Spx, aka Cold Specks, has already previewed half of the 10 tracks that comprise her sophomore album, Neuroplasticity. If you need a refresher, there’s the simmering lead single “Absisto”; the surprisingly jaunty “Bodies at Bay”; the meditative “Old Knives”; the ghostly “A Broken Memory”, and the Michael Gira-assisted “Exit Plan”. Today, she returns with yet another preview in “A Formal Invitation”.

Behind Spx’s characteristically sturdy and soulful alto, “A Formal Invitation” glistens with gloomy, spaced-out guitars that trudge along in an almost dirge-like manner. Following the understated intro, cymbals and ominous organ tones crash around her voice, giving the arrangement an almost frightening air of drama. By the end, soothing horns soften the dissonance, creating a jarringly jazzy backdrop to Spx’s rather ominous send-off, “I’ll smother you in silence until you choke on dead air.” It’s both spooky and stunning, and one of the more audacious tracks of Neuroplasticity.
