As Kindness, U.K. singer Adam Bainbridge draws upon the influences of disco icons like Nile Rodgers and Cerro and R&B specialists such as D’Angelo and Jam & Lewis. His debut album, 2012’s World, You Need a Change of Mind, also incorporated bits of chillwave and synthpop, leading to a collection of songs as artsy and edgy as they were purely warm and playful. The sound struck a chord, landing Bainbridge spots at the SXSW and iTunes festivals and a collaboration with Dev Hynes on the latest Blood Orange record.
Now, Bainbridge is readying the release of his sophomore album, Otherness, due out October 14th via Female Energy/Mom + Pop. The 10-track effort was recorded in studios across the world alongside a slew of collaborators, including Robyn, R&B singer Kelela, Ghanian rapper M.anifest, and Bainbridge’s old buddy Dev Hynes. According to a press release, “The album finds underlying connections between a stunning diversity of antecedents and synthesizes them into something new, perhaps even timeless.”
As our first taste, Bainbridge teams with singers Kelela and Ade for “World Restart”. Taking influence from Fela Kuti, the track is a kind of R&B-jazz fusion, with lithe saxophone laying down the foundation while funk-driven percussion and the clatter of bass fill out the groove. The real heart and soul, though, lies in the vocal interplay between the trio of Bainbridge, Kelela, and Ade: Though each get time to shine, it’s when they combine into a gentle cascade of sensuality that the song is at its most inescapable.
