Malcolm Young, founding member and guitarist of AC/DC, suffers from dementia and is receiving full-time care in Sydney, Australia nursing home, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
On Wednesday, AC/DC announced Young’s departure from the band. According to a press release, “due to the nature of [his] condition, he will not be returning to the band.”
Malcolm founded AC/DC alongside his brother Angus in 1973, and remained a permanent fixture in the band ever since. He is widely considered as one of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest rhythm guitarist and was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame with the rest of AC/DC in 2003.
AC/DC recently announced the release of a new album, Rock or Bust, along with a supporting world tour. They’ve recruited Malcolm’s nephew, Stephen, as his replacement.
