A few weeks ago, Childish Gambino announced a new mixtape, STN MTN / KAUAI, named after his childhood home in Stone Mountain, Georgia and Hawaii’s Kauai island. Today, he previews the release with a track called “Sober”.
Labeled as a “rough” version of the track, “Sober” puts Gambino’s modern touch on some early-era Michael Jackson instrumentals, with shiny synths plinking over a feedback-ing beat. Though the music may be upbeat, the lyrics are typical of Donal Glover’s less-than-happy moments: “And now that it’s over, I’ll never be sober / I couldn’t believe, but now I’m so high.” Take a listen below.
STN MTN / KAUAI is due out later this year via DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz imprint. Gambino also released the track “Candler Road” back in the end of August, though it’s unclear if that song is from STN MTN / KAUAI.
