Deerhoof shares new song “Paradise Girls”, announces tour dates

Deerhoof has said that its upcoming 12th studio album, La Isla Bonita, is “the latest volley in an ongoing conversation we’ve been honored to hold for 20 years,” adding, “We don’t set out to create masterpieces. The Deerhoof fan is a thrill-seeker.” That often means having a certain willingness to not only follow the band as they sonically shift and expand with each album, but also between individual album tracks.

The quintet kicked things off with “Exit Only”, bucking off the electronica of 2012’s Breakup Song and embracing their gritty rock ‘n’ roll roots. Now, on “Paradise Girls”, Deerhoof leaps genres and aesthetics once more, landing smack dab in the realm of syrupy ’90s alt pop. With its mix of vaguely island rhyhtms, swirling, looping guitar antics, and Satomi Matsuzaki’s cheery vocals, the song seems perfectly suited for some bizarre kids show circa 1993. Preferably one with either a talking dog or a friendly robot sidekick.

In a press release, drummer Greg Saunier had this to say about “Paradise Girls”: “Our heroes on this song are Joan Jett, Janet Jackson, Kim Gordon, Kathleen Hanna. It’s about how girls are and have always been smarter.”

La Isla Bonita is due out November 4th via Polyvinyl. In support, the band has announced a North American tour. The 16-date jaunt spans the month of November and features support from Lightning Bolt, Cibo Matto, Busdriver, and more. Consult their full schedule below.
