Joanna Newsom narrates new trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice — watch

Joanna Newsom will make her actorial debut in Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel Inherent Vice. According to The New York Times, she’s been cast as Sortilège, an “earth-goddess-like” figure who narrates the film. Today, we get our first look at Newsom’s acting chops in the film’s trailer, which you can watch below.

The film itself could easily be a Newsom song, a madcap story of a 1970s private detective that becomes embroiled in a somewhat dark, slightly comedic triangle of love, deceit, and greed that’s been facilitated by his devious ex-lover.

According to IMDB, Inherent Vice is due out January 9th, 2015. In addition to Newsom, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, and Jena Malone. The film features a score courtesy of Radiohead’s own Jonny Greenwood.
