Thanks to fast-rising acts like You Blew It! and Touché Amoré, as well as the recent reunions of Braid and American Football, emo has made quite the dent in 2014’s musical landscape. Chicago’s own Kittyhawk are another band part of the #emorevival, but they put a different spin on the genre by embracing pop sensibilities and even opting for a Farfiza organ in place of a bass guitar. On October 14th, they’ll share their unique sonics with the world by releasing their debut record, Hello, Again, through Count Your Lucky Stars Records.
Their latest single, “Seasonal Abjective Disorder”, feels like a throwback to emo’s ’00s era mixed with a twee pop aesthetic. Here, frontwoman Kate Grube’s sweet vocals travel over bristly distortion, acting as a gorgeous intersection of both genres. Meanwhile, the guitars shift between chunky chords and sharp riffs, giving the full spectrum of pop punk without ever getting too cheesy.
