On September 23rd, garage rock statesman King Tuff is releasing a new album Black Moon Spell via Sub Pop. Though the forthcoming effort includes “Eyes of the Muse” and “Black Moon Spell”, it won’t feature his latest single, “Danger In The Dark”. That’s because it’s been released as part of “The Tavern Series”, a new campaign spearheaded by one of the best nautically-named rum brands, Captain Morgan.
While a press release describes the song as evoking “the pirate spirit” or something, “Danger In The Dark” is instead a sleek and slow-burning rocker. With production from Harry Fraud, who has previously worked with polar-opposite acts like Rick Ross and Wiz Khalifa, there are subtle but glossy studio flourishes that succeed in polishing its sound without taking away from Tuff’s signature garage rock scuzz. Throughout, Tuff sings the refrain, “give me the fire” while guitars blitz and cascade around him. It may not make you pour yourself a rum and coke at this hour, but it’s still a thrilling shot of menacing rock. Listen in below.
