Perfume Genius releases song “Grid” — listen

Singer-songwriter Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, takes yet another step away from the quaint piano ballads of his early career on “Grid”, the latest single from his upcoming third studio album, Too Bright.

Like its predecessor “Queen”, “Grid” shines with a kind of exotic, new wave energy, as Hadreas unfurls his elegant croon over layers of tribal drums, glitchy, repetitive synths, and the occasional deep, mournful wail. But where he may have held back slightly before, “Grid” now finds Hadreas as a man absolutely possessed by his darker, inner self.

And speaking of inner turmoil, the song’s accompanying video touches on that very subject. According to a press release, the Charlotte Rutherford-directed clip sees Hadreas “literally surrounded by his (hentai-clad) demons before confronting them head on and being devoured by them. It’s a quixotic, unsettling video for sure, but not without flashes of Hadreas’ black humor, making the whole thing uniquely and typically Perfume Genius.”

Too Bright is due out September 21st via Matador Records. In support of the album, Hadreas will embark on an extensive world tour starting in early October. Consult the full schedule here.
