Later this month, The Rentals and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin will share the stage for a trio of dates along the East Coast. To commemorate the brief jaunt, SSLYBY has recorded a cover of “Stardust”, off The Rentals’ first album in some 15 years, Lost In Alphaville.
SSLYBY reinterpret the fuzzy, distorted track into a lo-fi, bedroom pop ballad. Will Knauer’s warbling voice, paired with the rickety acoustic guitars, give the track an Adore-era Smashing Pumpkins vibe, sounding both delicate and disturbed. Brooding electric guitars ring out in the background of the chorus like a hazy afterthought, never overshadowing the serene acoustic finger-picking. Though not as raucous as the original, SSLYBY manages to keep the sobering atmosphere intact while adding a bit more melancholy to the mix.
“I’ve had Stardust in my head for four straight months,” multi-instrumentalist Philip Dickey said in a statement. “You can try to keep living your life like that or you can try to cover it, so we covered it. ”
