Following next month’s run of reunions shows, The Libertines plan to hit the studio to record their first album in a decade. Simultaneously, singer-guitarist Carl Barât will prep the debut full-length from his new side band, The Jackals. The as-yet-untitled LP is due out early next year through Cooking Vinyl / Grand Jury Records.
In a statement, Barât said he had originally began recording the album solo during an extended stay in Los Angeles. Realizing he “didn’t like (his) own company,” he hit the Internet and recruited several musicians using online ads. “I was lucky, because I found a bunch of people who genuinely fit together as a gang,” Barât explained.
To accompany today’s announcement, The Jackals have shared the LP’s lead single, “Glory Days”, which features a cameo by Beastie Boys percussionist Alfredo Ortiz. It’s clear that Barât has brought a lot of what made The Libertines so effective into this new project, mostly the endless attitude and slightly ramshackle approach and song structures.
