30 years after they were unceremoniously banned from Saturday Night Live, The Replacements returned to 30 Rockefeller Center last night, this time to serve as musical guest on The Tonight Show. Founding members Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson, along with drummer Josh Freese and guitarist David Minehan, delivered a scorching rendition of their classic single “Alex Chilton”.
Watch the replay below.
According to Jimmy Fallon music booker Jonathan Cohen, he hounded the band for nearly a year before they finally agreed to play the show.
Coincidentally, last night’s episode also featured The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards as a guest, leading to this amazing photograph.
And here’s Questlove and Cohen with Stinson.
