Caribou’s video for “Our Love” eloquently parallels love and death — watch

This week, Canadian producer/musician Dan Snaith, aka Caribou, releases his first album in over four years, Our Love. To mark the occasion, Snaith has shared a video for the album’s title track, directed by Ryan Staake (Alt-J, Major Lazer, Darkside).

Here, we follow a woman at two very different points in her life: as a young bride on her wedding day and as an older widow. The sense of parallel and overall emotional intent are quite clear, with the woman reflecting on a joyous past as she makes her way toward the uncertainty of the water’s edge. We may never get any sort of resolution, but the clip is an emotionally jarring experience that’s further enhanced by the soulful soundtrack.

In a statement, Staake said, “In ‘Our Love’, I wanted to create a slow, brooding film that contrasted the seeming limitless of youth with the reality of death in later years. The film (which was photographed by Luca Ciuti) was shot on location in Ireland, at the beautiful Lough Ine House, about an hour and a half outside of Cork.”
