Glaswegian synthpop outfit CHVRCHES are still touring strong behind their debut album, last year’s excellent The Bones of What You Believe. However, in recent weeks, the trio has been performing a brand new song that’s appeared on setlists under several rather humorous titles: “Richard Pryor”, “Gene Wilder”, and “Eddie Murphy”. (Don’t get too attached to any of those; multi-instrumentalist Iain Cook explained they’re all just nonsensical working titles.) No matter its name, the resulting track sees the trio build upon The Bones LP, forging a bass-heavy amalgamation of perpetually-upbeat dance pop and slightly dark, almost brooding electro.
CHVRCHES once again performed “Sam Kinison” (totally should be the finished title) at this weekend’s Austin City Limits. Check out a webcast rip of the song below (via Stereogum).
CHVRCHES currently have no timetable for the release of their sophomore album. As Cook told Classic Pop recently, “We’re not going to put out anything we aren’t happy with. That could take four months, it could take two years. It’s too early to talk about new songs, because nothing is finished. We do most of our work in the studio together – it’s fine for one person to come up with something, but it’s not a Chvrches song until it’s been bounced back and forth between the three of us.”
